Favourites in advertising

I have a really keen interest in advertising. It has always been a fun thing that I have enjoyed doing throughout college. Everyone in my class always seemed to hate getting an advertising campaign brief but I loved it. I’m not sure why this is, maybe it’s because I love a good pun!

Some of my favourite ads have been the Irn Bru adverts. They really push it to the limit with their adverts. I think it’s because they are a Scottish brand that they can get away with it so much. A classic was the ‘Fanny’ campaign. I suggest that if you haven’t watched it you do so now, you’ll have a proper giggle at it.

I also like the Lego posters. It is always about the imagination when it comes to Lego. I remember as a child having Lego and building houses for my polly pocket to live in. The campaign really shows that the little brick can be whatever your imagination wants it to be.

Another great campaign is Absolut Vodka. They take the bottle and make it into something different every time. Absolut created 1500 ads of one bottle—they literally make the bottle into anything. I like the destination themed ones. For example, the Absolut LA is a bottle shaped swimming pool. It is a very unique and fun campaign to see. It just shows you that you can make a really simple looking product and make something creative out of it.

The Old Spice advert from 2010 always makes me laugh. I think it is the general tone of the ad and how random it is. ‘The man your man could smell like’. I remember seeing this everywhere, it went viral before going viral was even cool.

Another one that was funny was the ‘apology’ poster KFC printed when they ran out of chicken. It shows an empty bucket with the letters FCK on it. I think it’s good that they did this because it shows that they aren’t afraid to be bold and laugh at themselves, no one is above saying sorry and the way they approach the apology through this poster is pretty hilarious.
